Centro Colombo and Centro Vasco da Gama join the Lisbon European Green Capital 2020 Commitment

Sonae Sierra’s two shopping centres in Lisbon – Centro Colombo and Centro Centro Vasco da Gama – have signed up to the Lisbon European Green Capital 2020 – Climate Action Lisbon 2030 Commitment, and will implement additional measures in order to contribute to environmental sustainability, the mitigation of climate change, and energy and water efficiency.
Among other actions, Centro Colombo will continue to install LED lighting inside and outside the building; maintain Technical Management Systems that improve the performance of lighting and air conditioning systems; and install flow limiters on taps, showers and flushing systems as well as more efficient irrigation systems.
Centro Vasco da Gama will also extend LED lighting throughout the building; maintain Technical Management Systems that improve the performance of lighting and air conditioning systems; install flow limiters on taps, showers and flushing toilets and more efficient irrigation systems; use rainwater collected from building roofs to flush toilets, as well as reusing non-potable water obtained from the walls of the car park in toilets and irrigation systems, among other initiatives.

For more than 20 years, Sonae Sierra has made a commitment to the environment and society by investing in the implementation of efficiency measures in the management of energy, water and waste, in improving health and safety, and by integrating sustainability into its business model. By 2018, the Company had improved the eco-efficiency of its shopping centres across most key parameters, namely, reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 79%, electricity consumption by 47%, water consumption by 23%, while the waste recycling rate grew 239%.
